Students, alumni, faculty and staff from Brockton and surrounding communities, and from Boston College came together at Rocky Marciano Stadium, Brockton High School on April 25th to remember Lou Montgomery (Brockton High 1937, Boston College 1941) with a Family Fun/3K Run Day. Sponsored by the Lou Montgomery Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization established to honor an extraordinary football player, scholar, and gentleman, who was the first Black athlete at BC. The board of directors includes former student-athletes, some who also went on to play professionally, as well as former Brockton city officials, teachers, and university professors.
This first event included a 3K run, thanks to members of the Brockton track and cross-country team, and former Brockton high and Boston College athletes; face paints, coloring contest, and raffle. Members of the Brockton High National Honor Society, their teacher, and their principal joined members of the Foundation Board, and everyone from toddlers to teens to adults had a chance to share in the fun and learn a little more about Lou Montgomery.
Lou Montgomery’s commitment to unite individuals and communities through education and sports, so as to strengthen understanding and respect on and off the field, continues in the work of the Foundation. Together, we honor the past and learn from one another in the present, mindful of Lou Montgomery’s goal to inspire and support future generations.
